COVID-19 cases withdrawn due to lab error

April 19, 2021

Sixteen presumptive COVID-19 cases have been withdrawn from the region’s statistics, all from the Rocher-Percé area.

Chandler’s testing laboratory has temporarily closed its doors after abnormally high rates of false positive results were detected.

"The laboratory was contaminated with the products of nucleic acid amplification, which gave false results," said regional director of public health, Dr Yv Bonnier Viger.

The sudden and abnormal increase in the number of cases raised the alarm at the regional public health department.

According to Dr. Bonnier Viger, "We realized that we had a lot of cases that did not fit the epidemiological stories when we were investigating."

The 16 cases were therefore removed from the region’s totals.

There are currently 36 active cases in the Gaspesia-the-Islands region.
